Indian cinema is known throughout the world for being more like a celebration that a movie industry with stars frequently seen on screen dressed in some truly amazing clothing and showing off the very best the Indian fashion scene has to offer.

Whether it’s an action movie or a more traditional romcom, viewers get a genuine feeling that they’re in Mumbai or Delhi because the film gives you such a connection to the stars and everything unfolding before you whether you’re watching in a cinema or even if you watch Bollywood movies on or other online streaming sites. That is, after all, one of the main aims of the cinema industry; to make the audience feel as though they’re actually involved in the action, making it seem more of a theatrical production than a movie.

Bollywood in particular gives the viewing public excellent value for money in that respect with plenty of singing and dancing to keep you intrigued and engrossed – a far cry from some of the Hollywood blockbusters that often leave you feeling as though you’ve wasted your time and money on a film that didn’t do it for you at all. It also gives you the inspiration to try out some new looks because of the vast array of fashion trends on show. If you watch a Bollywood movie from start to finish, the chances are that you’ll see one actor actress in a number of different outfits but all will be the kind of thing you would expect to see at a movie premiere or at a special occasion, not simply walking down the street.

Indian cinema is the perfect platform for fashion designers to showcase their talents and by dressing the biggest names in the industry in their labels they have the chance to make a name for themselves too. In fact, in India, if you can get one of your designs onto the big screen (or laptop screen for the increasing number watching online of course), it’s the equivalent of making it into the movie yourself in a starring role – it’s as much a fashion show as it is a movie.

In 2014 we’ve already seen some incredible outfits worn by Bollywood’s biggest stars, and plenty of up and coming actors too. One of the most popular trends this year has been the traditional saree with stars wearing the long gowns on both the red carpet and the films themselves. We’ve seen stars such as Aishwarya Rai showcasing a stunning black and green saree teamed with some simple yet amazing jewellery to cap off a fine luxury look. There’s just something about a saree that makes a woman look elegant and stylish at any occasion.

Another stunning look is that showcased by the likes of Anushka Sharma. The actress burst onto the Bollywood scene in 2008 and has since become something of a fashion icon in Indian cinema and has been nominated in the top 10 Bollywood actresses for a number of years. One of her most popular looks is to team short shorts with stylish tops and blazers which show off her long legs, one for the younger audience certainly but if you’ve got it, flaunt it.

Then there is arguably the hottest actress in Indian cinema, Katrina Kaif, who has recently been at the London Fashion Week as one of the most popular actresses and fashion icons. Again blending modern style with elegance, Katrina is regularly seen sporting neutral colours teamed with bright and stylish additions in the form of skirts or shorts making her one of India’s biggest style icons as well as a top actress.
